History: The Building

McCreesh Place utilizes a 64-unit, single-room-occupancy design that was selected with extensive research and sensitive care for the residents that now call it home.

As architect David Furman describes, the design for McCreesh Place is based on a particular SRO model in South Bronx, NY. The building is uniquely organized into clusters of 4 apartments that place residents into small groups. Each cluster is called a suite, and two of these suites are joined on a hallway with a kitchen. Eight (8) residents live on a wing together and cook their meals in a common area. These intentional areas contribute to small group interaction, and a sense of privacy as well as community.

In addition to 16 suites and 8 wings with common kitchens for residents, the building has a reading lounge on the 3rd floor, and a large community room where Resident Association meetings and holiday celebrations can occur. McCreesh Place is a three-story building, with three wings to a floor. The ninth wing provides for staff offices where residents receive support services onsite.

Each of the 63 apartments includes its own sink and medicine cabinet, as well as its own heating and air conditioning unit and cable and telephone hook-ups. Each suite of 4 shares a single bathroom and a single shower, placed apart in separate rooms, allowing residents more access. The kitchens offer each resident a cabinet of their own to keep locked. Laundry facilities are onsite. These details enhance residents’ sense of security, independence and control in their environments.

A distinct feature appreciated by residents and the neighborhood alike is a prominent window above the front entrance that remains lit through the night. David Furman prioritized light in the design of the building, using large windows in both apartments and common areas, and he envisioned this light as a symbol of the “beacon of hope” that McCreesh Place is for residents and the community.
